Latest Updates from Our Project:

Backerkit Surveys!
almost 10 years ago – Wed, Apr 06, 2016 at 11:43:46 PM

Hello backers!

Just a quick note today to announce that Backerkit surveys are going live within the hour. Please keep an eye on your inbox for the full survey that will let you select your sourcebooks and add-ons, upgrade your pledge, and give us all the information we need to get your books to you later this year.

Everyone must fill out the Backerkit survey to get your books, even if you filled out a previous survey to get your PDFs. This is the survey that really counts!

A few more announcements about Backerkit:

Add-ons and Upgrades

If you want to add additional items to your order or upgrade your pledge, Backerkit will allow you to add extra funds to your order. The whole system is fairly self-explanatory, but let us know if you encounter any problems or issues.

Please remember that this may be your last chance to get items that will have a limited print run: decks of cards, Hero points, and the Pirate Edition limited print run. We might have more of those items in the future, but we can’t guarantee it!

Backerkit Preorders

Now that Backerkit is up, we’re open for preorders! Please check out the link below for our 7th Sea Preorder page:

https://7th-sea-second-edition.backerkit.com/hosted_preorders

Please spread the word about the preorders! If we can raise an additional $33,187 in preorders, we’ll unlock the full Explorer’s Society through DTRPG!

Lockdown and Charge Dates

Both backers and preorders have until May 15th to change their order. At that time, we’ll lock down everyone’s orders so that we have consistent numbers for production. We’ll leave the preorder page open until at least June 1st, but we might leave it open longer if we think we can make it work to keep taking orders.

If you add on any funds to your order (or preorder), we’ll charge those additional funds on June 1st. Please let us know if you want us to charge your account earlier than that date.

Thanks!

1st Edition PDFs, Backerkit, Freelance Work, and Foreign Licensing
almost 10 years ago – Tue, Apr 05, 2016 at 12:12:43 AM

Hello all!

We’ve got a lot of housekeeping to attend to today. While John and the rest of the writing staff slave away on the main text and images for the Core Rulebook, the production team has been busy with PDFs, Backerkit and more...

7th Sea: 1st Edition PDFs

Over the weekend, we sent out over 10,000 PDFs to all the backers who have already completed the early Kickstarter survey. We’re going to be doing a Backerkit survey later to ask about add-ons (see below), but this first survey was to get DrivethruRPG emails for this first wave of 1st Edition PDFs.

We’re happy to say that many of those PDFs have already been downloaded from DTRPG! Of course, the massive amount of traffic caused DTRPG to struggle to keep up with you all, but we’ve gotten good reports of folks being able to download their PDFs. Yay!

As a note of clarification, we’re still waiting on DTRPG to assign the remaining nine books (Swashbuckling Adventures) to our account. We’ll send those out to you all as soon as we get them set up with us instead of AEG.

If you have not gotten your PDFs yet, please fill out this form:

DTRPG PDF Error Report: http://goo.gl/forms/zb8XdklEaz

We’ll be sending PDFs out to those backers who haven’t gotten them throughout the week. Thanks again for your patience!

Backerkit Surveys

While our first survey was just about PDFs, our next survey through Backerkit will be the real deal: you’ll get to specify your add-ons, select your sourcebooks, and more. We hoped to get the Backerkit survey out today, but it looks like we need a bit more time to make sure everything is ready. Look for that survey in your inbox by midweek!

In addition to managing existing pledges, we’ll also be taking preorders through Backerkit. If someone you know missed the campaign, they’ll be able to get on board through the preorder page. And remember that all of the additional funds we raise in Backerkit will go toward us reaching that last stretch goal at $1.35M!

Stay tuned for the Backerkit survey this week, and we'll let you know when the preorder page is up and running!

Writing, Art, and Foreign Licensing Applications

In addition to Backerkit, we’re also releasing three new surveys today for folks interested in getting involved with the project:

7th Sea: Call for Writers - Want to write for 7th Sea? Now’s your chance! (http://goo.gl/forms/tTxUJFVz2k)

7th Sea: Call for Artists - Want to contribute art to 7th Sea? We’d love to talk to you! (http://goo.gl/forms/eJdUaCgawh)

7th Sea: Foreign Licensing Bid - Want to publish 7th Sea in a foreign language? Let us know! (http://goo.gl/forms/7t5OWBqGjC)

The two calls for contributors will be open until April 15th; the foreign licensing bid process will be open to April 22nd. Please let us know if you’re having any problems fill out the appropriate form.

We’re looking forward to picking out some awesome writers and artists for upcoming books, and we’re really excited to talk to any publishers looking to bring 7th Sea to a foreign language market. Fill out the right form and we’ll be in touch!

Thank you!

As always, we really appreciate everyone’s kindness and patience as we get things out the door. You all are amazing fans, and we’re pumped to make 7th Sea: Second Edition a reality! Thanks!

The Open Seas
almost 10 years ago – Sat, Mar 26, 2016 at 10:57:44 PM

Hello all!

It’s been nearly two weeks since we wrapped up the 7th Sea Kickstarter, and we’ve been busy! Our artists are signed, we’re working on the text for the Core Rulebook, and everything is coming together beautifully. I can’t wait to show you everything you’ve made possible.

For example, here’s some of the amazing art that Marissa has commissioned from one of our artists, Manuel Castanon:

An Eisen Hero
An Eisen Hero

The next few months are going to be a bit slow as we get in text, art, and more for our first few books. Production is a marathon, not a sprint, but you’re going to hear from us on a regular basis. We’ll be doing one update a month around the 25th and additional updates as we have stuff to announce. Often, you’ll be hearing directly from Mark, the project manager for the line.

And on that notes, I’m going to turn this over to Mark to talk about production stuff…

Hello everyone!

First, thank you so much for your support and excitement. It's an honor to be working on 7th Sea and you all have been amazing: kind, thoughtful, and a lot of fun. And we've got some fun announcements today!

1st Edition PDFs (April 1)

We’ve got a long road ahead of us, but things are going to start off with a bang this next month when we release the 1st Edition PDFs to all our $40+ backers. As soon as everyone’s pledges go through (around April 1), we’re going to release all the PDFs so that you can start digging into everything Théah has to offer.

Since we’re fulfilling all of the PDFs for this campaign through DriveThruRPG (DTRPG), we’re going to be collecting your DriveThruRPG account emails through the Kickstarter survey tool. This survey will be pretty lean: we're only going to ask you a few brief questions.

We’ll be sending that survey out later today. Please fill it out ASAP so that we can get you your PDFs on April 1st! (And if you don't have a DTRPG account yet, you can make one right here: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/login.php)

Backerkit (April 4)

In addition to the Kickstarter survey, we’re also going to be using a pledge manager called Backerkit to keep track of all your rewards and add-ons. Basically, Backerkit has all the features that Kickstarter doesn’t have: add-on support, more complicated surveys, etc. We’ve used Backerkit for most other JWP campaigns and it’s made tracking everything much easier!

We’ll be sending out Backerkit invitations by April 4th, 2016. From that point, you’ll have until April 29th, 2016 to make changes to your order and add-on/upgrade your pledge. Once we hit April 29th, we’ll lock down everyone’s orders so we have accurate counts for things like dice and books; you won’t be able to change your order after April 29th without contacting us directly.

We’ll also be making preorders available through Backerkit by April 4th for those folks who missed the campaign. The preorder options will include most reward tiers, but it’s going to be a more limited, focused set. We’ll have more information on that when the preorder page goes live.

If you add-on additional materials, upgrade your pledge, or preorder, we will charge your account on May 31st, 2016. Obviously, if you don’t add anything additional to your order, you won’t be charged anything by Backerkit; Kickstarter has already collected your funds!

New Crew: Liz Chaipraditkul and Ben Woerner

Now that the campaign has wrapped, we’ve got a much better idea of what we need to make this voyage a success. Please welcome two new members of our crew: Liz Chaipraditkul and Ben Woerner!

Liz Chaipraditkul is a game developer and writer who lives in the Netherlands. She owns Angry Hamster Publishing - a tabletop role play company and writes articles for her own personal blog on gaming. Liz’s first solo game WITCH: Fated Souls, was successfully funded on Kickstarter in 2015. When not in her own imaginary world, Liz keeps busy with crafting and walking her dog.

Liz is our lead developer for the Heroes and Villains book, one of the first sourcebooks we’re going to release for the 7th Sea line later this year. Liz has done some amazing work on her own book, WITCH, and we’re excited to have her take the lead on making our NPC book (and the Deck of Heroes/Villiany) awesome.

BEING HEREIN THE WHOLLY TRUE AND INTERESTING TALE OF BEN WOERNER, PIRATE:

As a child, Ben Woerner knew that one day he'd be a pirate. In preparation, he read and watched Captain Blood, Treasure Island and trained to be a pirate, in true Defoe fashion, there's more, but then this bio would be too long.

Ben is our co-developer (along with John) for the Pirate Nations book, our first sourcebook! As you might have noticed from his bio… Ben loves, loves, loves pirates. We’ve been working with Ben on multiple projects for a while now (including World of Dew, his samurai noir sequel to John’s Blood & Honor), and I can’t wait to see what he and John cook up for the big book of pirates!

For those of you who are interested in writing for 7th Sea, stay tuned for our writer all-call announcement. We’ll be sending out information on how to apply for freelance writing positions around April 1st.

Pledge Problems

Finally, if you’re having any problems at all with your pledge, please let us know via Kickstarter messages. In most cases, you’ll be able to resolve things with Kickstarter. If you can’t fix it before your pledge is dropped, however, we’ll be able to get you back into the campaign when Backerkit goes live. Don't worry; we'll get everything sorted out, no matter the problem!

As always, please let us know if you have any comments or questions! We’re excited to see everything move forward, and we’re thrilled to have you all on our crew!

The End, At Last
almost 10 years ago – Fri, Mar 18, 2016 at 12:41:56 PM

This is it! The campaign is over! I’m typing because Mark has me chained to the table and won’t let me play at the party until I write this. Marissa is wearing an Assassin’s Creed outfit. We just finished! It doesn't feel real.

I really don’t know what else to say here. There is a huge party going on and I’m just rambling because we’re fixing to post and the screen in front of me says $1,316,813. If you took the “1” off the front of that number, you get the number Mark and I thought we might get. Honestly. We had no idea this project would be so successful. And whenever anyone asks me, “Why did this happen?” I just answer, “The fans.”

YOU made this happen. Your enthusiasm, faith and generosity. I’ve said this at the end of all our Kickstarter campaigns: gamers always impress me with their generosity. But this time… holy cow, folks. Holy frickin’ cow.

Okay, I’m rambling now. Time to talk about REAL stuff. But one last thank you before I do.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

The Explorer’s Society

We came really close to making it to $1.35M. So close! So… we’re going to count anything and everything we raise on Backerkit for this stretch goal. All the add-ons, pre-orders, upgrades… everything. We’ll count all that for the $1.35M goal. And I think we’ll hit it with room to spare.

So get your pitches and ideas ready. We’re looking forward to all the cool stuff you put up on DriveThruRPG!

What’s Next?

First… sleep. Well… more party. Then sleep. Lots of sleep. Even Mr. Monster needs sleep!

But after that? We go to work.

In the next few days, Mark and I are going to update you about our next steps, about Backerkit, about our production schedule. We've got some staff to announce! And more exciting surprises as we get to show off all the cool art and writing we're going to do in the next... 18 months.

So stay tuned. The voyage we're on just. left. port.

AND THANK YOU. THANK YOU!

EU-Friendly Shipping, Pirate Previews, and New World Events
almost 10 years ago – Fri, Mar 18, 2016 at 04:46:41 AM

Wow. Just wow. We’re less than $40,000 away from $1,000,000. I cannot thank you all enough.

$950,000 means that we’ve unlocked the world map! All $40+ backers will get the map for free as a hi-res PDF, and we'll create a new add-on for folks who want to add a physical map (roughly 24’’ x 36’’) to their order. We’ve also added it to the pirate’s booty, so that everyone who backed at a tier that includes pirate’s booty will have the map added to their order for free!

But we’ve only got four days left… and so much left to do. I’ve got some neat announcements for the campaign today, so let's get to it.

EU-Friendly Shipping

We are proud to announce that the 7th Sea Kickstarter now features EU-Friendly shipping!

Thanks to the efforts of Simon Rogers (Pelgrane Press), we’ve gotten set up with Kixto—a UK-based fulfillment company—to fulfill all of the Kickstarter rewards for the EU. This means that you’ll pay zero fees, tariffs, taxes, or customs when everything is delivered to an EU address. ZERO. Everything is covered!

We’ve been working on this option for a few weeks now, and we’re so proud to finally have everything in order. Kixto has fulfilled a number of Kickstarters already, and we’re confident that they are going to do a tremendous job. We talked with a few other companies as well, but no one struck as having the capacity to fulfill the orders and the commitment to making sure it’s done right.

How does it work? Essentially, there’s a 0% tax on books coming into the UK, and once we get the books into the country in bulk, everything can go out across the EU without incurring further charges. There are still taxes on things like dice, cards, and maps, but we’ll cover the costs of those taxes. We’re saving enough on shipping through the UK that it works out to about even!

Thanks so much to backers who recommended that we pursue this option! We really appreciate your feedback! (And thanks to Stonemaier Games for their EU-Friendly logo.)

Preview of Pirate Edition

Thanks to the folks over at KrakenPrint, we’ve got in our first mockup of the leatherbound Pirate Edition:

Pirate Edition Mockup
Pirate Edition Mockup

Please remember that this isn’t final… but we think it’s pretty freaking cool. We’re working on a new logo which we’re thinking about putting across the top of the book, in addition to the foil-stamped sides and back that aren’t visible in this mockup and a ribbon bookmark. Let us know what you think!

New High Level Rewards and Add-ons

We’re adding in a few new high level rewards for the last few days of the campaign.

Although we’re maxed out on Dread Pirate and Hero Immortalized spots, we have managed to secure a few more Treasures Galore packages from our supplier. We’ll be adding five more of those tiers ($1,000) tomorrow morning at 12 pm Eastern.

We’ll also be adding in 10 Ultimate Adventure II awards. Mark Diaz Truman—The New World sourcebook lead developer—will be offering two World Events at GenCon that center on Aztlan! These ten spots will get you a seat at a game that will determine the future of The New World. As with the regular Ultimate Adventure rewards, you’ll get to write up a character (Théan or Aztlan, in this case) and jump deep into the heart of the continent’s politics, adventure, and drama!

In addition to these rewards, we’re also creating a new add-on for backers who are pledging at the Dread Pirate, Treasures Galore, Hero Immortalized, and Monarch levels:

$450 - ALL THE BOOKS ADD-ON: This add-on is only available to backers at the Dread Pirate, Treasures Galore, Hero Immortalized, and Monarch levels. You get all eleven sourcebooks funded by this campaign, plus an extra copy of the regular Core Rulebook to go along with your Pirate Edition corebook. International backers should add $50 for shipping.

More to Come

We’ve got more announcements to come, including news on community achievements, new stretch goals, and a some special events we’re planning for Sunday night when the Kickstarter closes. Stay tuned!
