Lands of Gold and Fire Backer Preview
almost 8 years ago – Fri, Apr 06, 2018 at 12:38:53 AM

Greetings! We’re excited to submit a preview draft of Lands of Gold and Fire for your review! It still needs a few pieces of art, a finalized credits page (some of the credits listed there are from Crescent Empire), a couple of very minor revisions, and some finishing touches, but is otherwise complete.

This preview has been pushed out to backers via Backerkit. If you didn’t get an email from Backerkit, you can grab the file directly from the Backerkit Digital Downloads page:

https://7th-sea-second-edition.backerkit.com/backer/digital_rewards

If for some reason your Backerkit doesn’t have the file, please message us via Kickstarter and we’ll get it sorted out for you.

As before… please don’t email or post in the comments with your feedback. With over 11,000 backers, that would overwhelm our ability to deal with emails and comments. Instead, please give us feedback via this link by April 12, 2018 at 10 pm Eastern Standard Time:

We’re looking forward to hearing your feedback on this book, and hope to send the final version later this month. Thank you for your ongoing support!

Hello and happy spring! We hope this update finds you in good spirits and warmer weather.

We’ve had some small delays as we adjust to our new production schedule. Rest assured, these delays are necessary to promise the same level of quality of our previous sourcebooks. Current timetables are as follows:

  • The New World: COMPLETE
  • Lands of Gold and Fire: proofing, PDF delivery estimated April 2018
  • The Colonies: copy editing to layout, PDF delivery estimated May 2018
  • Secret Societies: copy editing, PDF delivery estimated June 2018
  • Cities of Faith - Vaticine City: layout to proofing, PDF delivery estimated April 2018
  • Cities of Faith - Iskandar: copy editing to layout, delivery TBD
  • Cities of Faith - Quamontaigne: dev editing, delivery TBD
  • Maps: Colonies map dev review, estimated May 2018*
  • The Gossamer Empire: layout, electronic delivery estimated early May 2018

*Why the map delays? The print maps have been delayed due to the extensive research that’s gone into naming locations for The Colonies sourcebook map. We’re excited to get the maps into your hands, and hope to have PDF previews in April! Thanks for your patience!

Welcoming Danielle Lauzon as Line Developer!

February Production Update, New World, Hardcover Novels, and Sea Shanties!
about 8 years ago – Sat, Feb 03, 2018 at 12:03:35 AM

The New World

The Nations of Aztlan have arrived! Congrats to Mark Diaz Truman and Danielle Lauzon for getting this book out to print. Now our backers can get to know the Nahuacan Alliance, the city states of Tzak K'an, and empire of Kuraq like we do in a nice, shiny hardcover sourcebook.

As usual, we'll be running the delivery for these books through our webstore via coupon codes delivered through Backerkit. We’ve already pushed those coupons out via email, but if you didn’t get an email, you can grab your coupon directly from the Backerkit Digital Downloads page: https://7th-sea-second-edition.backerkit.com/backer/digital_rewards

Getting your book from our website is simple:

Hardcover Novels in Print

The hardcovers for Born Under the Black Flag and Daughter of Fate are here! Read about the adventures of Thomas St. Claire and Elena Mondavi with a solid and sturdy hardcover in your hands.

As with our sourcebooks, we’ll be running the delivery for these books through our webstore via coupon codes delivered through Backerkit. We’ve already pushed those coupons out via email, but if you didn’t get an email, you can grab your coupon directly from the Backerkit Digital Downloads page: https://7th-sea-second-edition.backerkit.com/backer/digital_rewards

To get these, follow the same process as listed above for New World, except with these product links:

Note that your coupon entitles you to free shipping on your book, which applies to any other books you add to your order as well (like an additional Core Rulebook, Pirate Nations or any other JWP product!) This coupon is also good for one year, so you can wait to use it if you’re about to change your address or want more than one book delivered at a time. And if you didn’t yet purchase a hardcover copy of either of these novels and want to pick one up… now is a great time to buy your copy direct from our webstore!

Songs of the 7th Sea

Grab a mug of rum and sit down for a listen! We have a treat for you. Friend of the ship and crew, Sheldon Morley, has whipped up ten sea shanties for your listening pleasure. Want a jaunty tune? Listen to "Girls of Darwah-Town." Need a mournful ballad? Play "Rollicking Randy Dandy O." And if you listen carefully, you might hear Captain Wick tell a tale of haunting and terror. Give your 7th Sea games a kick with music on this CD.

For more of Sheldon's music, please visit his Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/sheldonmorley

You can purchase the CD from our webstore here: http://johnwickpresents.com/product/songs-from-the-7th-sea/

7th Sea Kickstarter Community Guidelines

As you may have seen in our last big production update, we’ve made some changes to the 7th Sea schedule. These changes were made to better support our staff and to keep producing books that meet the quality we demand of our creative team.

In general, you can still expect regular Kickstarter updates from our production team. We’re going to try our best to keep those monthly. If those updates come a little late, we welcome your questions and we’ll do our best to keep you updated in the comments section of Kickstarter.

Updates can come late for many reasons. The main one is this: syncing with all the right people to publish a backer update takes a lot of work. It involves the creation of product pages on the JWP website, the creation of coupon codes, distribution of codes to backers, updates from the production team on their current estimated timelines, checking in with writers and artists about in-development books, the list goes on!

Sometimes, responses from the JWP team may also come late. In most circumstances, this is because we’re funneling your request to the correct person. We’re a small company spread across different time zones, and a message sometimes has to jump from person to person before the correct crew member can give a response.

We hope that helps give a little bit of context about why things sometimes seem slow! Our direct email line for customer inquiries is [email protected] if you need to get a hold of us and don’t want to wait for us to find your Kickstarter comment.

With that said, we’re laying down stricter rules about the types of comments we will and won’t tolerate in this community space. While most of you have been patient and supportive (and we appreciate you, thanks!), we’ve noticed a growing trend in comments that are disrespectful, insulting, and/or abusive to our staff and other backers.

We want to be very clear on this: We understand that sometimes things happen that are disappointing and frustrating, and we will always work with you to try and make things better to the best of our abilities and deal in good faith. But, your disappointment and frustration does not give you license to be jerks to us or anyone else here, and we will respond to that.

Moving forward, here’s the process we’ll be using for dealing with comments that we believe create an unsustainable environment for other backers, and for the JWP creative team:

  • First, we’ll let you know via public comment that a comment has crossed a line. We’ll ask for an adjustment of behavior or a reframing of the question or comment.
  • If we still feel that a comment breaks our community guidelines, we’ll contact you privately addressing the behavior in question, with a warning about refunding the remaining portion of your pledge (which results in removal from the project).
  • If you’re unwilling or unable to meet these guidelines moving forward, we will refund the remaining portion of your pledge and you will be removed from the Kickstarter project.

With many rewards left to deliver, we want to focus on producing great books for you, and we want to do that in an environment that feels constructive for our staff and our other backers. We appreciate your help and support in making that happen!

Onward and Upward…

We’re more excited than we’ve ever been about the future of 7th Sea, and we’re glad to have you along for the ride. If you’re following the Khitai KS, stay tuned for some updates on that side regarding the corebook’s development and the awesome crew of writers and developers we’ve assembled for it.

Until next time, full sails and clear horizons!

November Production Update, Vaticine City Preview, and a New Adventure!
over 8 years ago – Wed, Nov 22, 2017 at 12:05:59 AM

Hi everyone!

October was a busy month at JWP. In addition to the Khitai Kickstarter, which closed last week at just over $200,000, we’ve been working to onboard new production staff to meet the evolving demands of the company. Thanks to everyone who came on board for Khitai, and thanks for your patience this month and last while we worked through some changes in our schedule.

We delayed the October production update for a few reasons: First, training new staff to support our ever-growing production needs. Second, working with our printer to address how November and December holiday closures would impact our estimated ship dates. And finally, talking with our own team—the writers, artists, and developers working on 7th Sea—about how they’re feeling now that they’ve seen seven (yes, seven… New World is at the printer now!) 7th Sea books to completion.

Changes to Production Schedule

Despite what it may look like, John Wick Presents is a small company. Aside from John, we have very few full-time staff members, with most of the team working part-time or on a per-project contract.

Over the past year and a half, the JWP team has worked around the clock to deliver books to your door. It’s work we’re excited to do, but after putting out a whole lot of sourcebooks this year, we’ve come up against exhaustion and staff burnout, something we really want to avoid! Burnout contributes to industry turnover, introduces mistakes in processes and communication, and makes it pretty much impossible to maintain a sustainable business that makes quality material.

To keep our staff healthy and to keep producing books that match the high standards we’ve set, we’ve made a decision to slow down the aggressive pace of our production schedule. This conversation started as we worked with our printer as mentioned above, and after talking it over with our creative team and our distributor, we’ve decided a slower production schedule is the one thing that will ensure a happy, healthy game line moving forward. Here is what that schedule now looks like:

  • The Crescent Empire: Complete
  • The New World: at printer, PDF delivery estimated December 2017
  • Lands of Gold and Fire: copyediting to layout, PDF delivery estimated February 2018
  • The Colonies: approvals to copyediting, PDF delivery estimated April 2018
  • Secret Societies: approvals to copyediting, PDF delivery estimated June 2018
  • Cities of Faith - Vaticine City: proofing to art, see below for preview
  • Cities of Faith - Iskandar: copyediting to layout
  • Cities of Faith - Quamontaigne: dev editing to copyediting
  • Maps: delivery estimated January 2018
  • Daughter of Fate; Born Under the Black Flag: hardcover shipping in December 2017
  • The Gossamer Empire: dev editing to copyediting, delivery estimated January 2018

We hope you’ll take the sourcebooks you’ve already seen (Pirate Nations, Nations of Théah, Crescent Empire, and more) as proof that we’re here for the long haul and committed to ongoing support for 7th Sea Second Edition. As always, we appreciate your support and enthusiasm, and look forward to delivering you more books next year!

Vaticine City Preview

We have a draft preview, sans art, available of Cities of Faith: Vaticine City! This supplement gives you an in-depth look at the heart of Vaticine politics and provides locales, hooks, and adventure seeds for a long stay in the City of Theus.

We can’t wait to get your feedback on our this book!

Our thanks go out to our developer for the project, Jesse Heinig, as well as the rest of the designers, writers, editors, artists, and consultants that helped make this happen. We're also looking forward to setting our senior art director, Marissa Kelly, loose on this iconic locale.

As before… please don’t email or post in the comments with your feedback. With over 11,000 backers, that would overwhelm our ability to deal with emails and comments. Instead give us feedback via this link by December 1, 2017 at 10:00pm Eastern:

https://goo.gl/forms/GXzhh5v1CY2tQrxs1

We hope to have the final version of Vaticine City available early next year for PDF download, and we hope you enjoy the preview!

New Adventure: Op’a on Board on DriveThruRPG

Op'a on Board: a Pirate Nations adventure
Op'a on Board: a Pirate Nations adventure

Our next adventure for Pirate Nations, written by Ariana Ramos, pits the Heroes against a powerful, mischievous adversary from Rahuri legend—the Op’a, a supernatural trickster that connects living souls to the Land of the Dead. You can pick up this new adventure for 7th Sea on DTRPG:

...And On We Sail

The office will be closed the rest of the week for Thanksgiving, but we’ll be back in the saddle on Monday, November 27th. We’ll be spending the rest of the year hitting our final milestones on the way to our current production goals, doing some internal bookkeeping, and closing up shop mid-December to relax and get a holiday break. Then we’ll be back starting January 8th, ready to keep sailing the Seven Seas, and we look forward to having you along on the voyage. Thank you!

Explorer’s Society Expanding!
over 8 years ago – Thu, Oct 12, 2017 at 11:19:51 PM

Hi everyone!

We’ve got a brief, special backer update today! If you’re not already a backer of 7th Sea: Khitai you may have missed the announcement that we’ve just expanded the Explorer’s Society, the 7th Sea community content program, to include fiction, card games, art, and comics!

This expansion was made possible due to your enthusiasm both for the Explorer’s Society itself (we're seeing new content there all the time) and for your continued support of 7th Sea’s ever-growing world.

Your contributions to the world of Théah have made for a vibrant community content program packed with expanded rules, dramatic chase sequences, monster manuals, and more. Now, by expanding the Explorer’s Society, we get to include not only new content, but new voices in that program.

It’ll be awhile yet before the Explorer’s Society is open for Khitai submissions, but stay tuned! In the meantime, we hope you’ll join us in filling the Explorer’s Society with art, stories, and games.

All thanks to you!

Khitai is a continuation and expansion of the 7th Sea we know and love. Our hope to support a long-term 7th Sea line depends in part on you, so if you haven’t taken the plunge yet, now’s the time to back Khitai! It was the support of early backers that inspired us to expand the Explorer’s Society program, and we’d love to include more surprises that benefit backers old and new throughout the campaign!

We’re working our way towards some special stretch goals—including new sourcebooks and adventures. A rich world of monster-filled mountains and magic seas awaits. Join us!
