Latest Updates from Our Project:
Journey East to Khitai!
– Tue, Oct 03, 2017 at 09:03:07 PM
Hey everyone!
Last year, you changed my life.
When we launched the 7th Sea: Second Edition Kickstarter, everyone here at JWP was excited to put our vision for Théah out in front of fans. We knew you all would be excited by the return of familiar faces AND the changes we were planning for the setting. We never expected to fund eleven sourcebooks, three novels, three decks of cards and more... but it's been a blast making all this amazing stuff real.
And now it's time for us to head east to new lands. Just like we promised.
Twenty years ago, I helped tell the story of Rokugan’s Clan War in Legend of the Five Rings. It’s been a long time since I’ve explored that territory, and this time, we’re not just limited to Japan. We’ve been talking about how to approach the the Pacific Rim for a long time. Now, we’re ready to show you what we’ve been planning.
Kingdoms of Khitai
In the East, the Hero’s role is different than in Théah. The Call to Adventure is very real, a spiritual urge to travel toward one’s destiny. It is not metaphor, but an inevitable pull all Heroes feel, a pull toward a duty that is greater than a Hero’s own desires. The Song of the World brings these Heroes together to fulfill important roles, urging them on to adventure together.
But Khitai is not a monolithic land. There are many individual Nations, lands with their own cultures and mysticism, Nations with complex histories and dynamic conflicts. From the jungles of Nagaja to the monsters of Kamerra to the courts of Shenzhou, Heroes of the East (and West!) must face Villains and problems that will challenge them in new and interesting ways.
7th Sea: Khitai Core Rulebook
7th Sea: Khitai is a standalone game; you don’t need any other books to play it. Khitai uses the same ENnie Award winning system from 7th Sea: Théah, but with new twists to make the game fit the concepts of the East. If you're interested in checking it out, you can download the 7th Sea: Khitai Quickstart right now on DriveThruRPG.
The new game will be 100% compatible with the rules from 7th Sea: Second Edition. In fact, you can use them with your Théan Heroes, allowing both Eastern and Western Heroes to adventure together across any land you like from the world of 7th Sea.
And we're not just funding a Core Rulebook...
Our campaign starts with the Fuso sourcebook already unlocked, a land of valiant samurai, mystical nispa and mysterious kamuy. The Mikado and Shogun are in a covert struggle to control Fuso, but first, they must win over the Clans. Which side will you choose? The Fuso sourcebook contains more details on this Nation. New details on the Clans, more Backgrounds, more Advantages and Fuso’s unique mysticism.
Join Us on Our Journey East!
Answer the Call to Adventure and join us on our journey to the lands of the East. We've got new sourcebooks, new dice and tokens and new stretch goals just waiting to be unlocked:
And THANK YOU! Your support means the world to us, and we're so excited to share what we've been working on with you all!
September 2017 Production Update + New World Preview
about 7 years ago
– Thu, Sep 28, 2017 at 11:24:46 PM
Hello all!
We've got a big update today: a New World preview, our September production update, a new adventure up on DTRPG by Tobie Abad, and more! And we're only five days away from the launch of the Khitai Kickstarter on October 3rd...
The New World Preview
The Crescent Empire has shipped to backers, so it’s time for us to turn our attention west! After a long journey across the Trade Sea and through the Atabean, past Villainous ATC ships… we have finally reached the mysterious and amazing continent of Aztlan!
This sourcebook preview has also been pushed out to backers via Backerkit. If you didn’t get an email from Backerkit, you can grab the file directly from the Backerkit Digital Downloads page:
If for some reason your Backerkit doesn’t have the file, please message us via Kickstarter and we’ll get it sorted out for you. We can’t wait to get your feedback on our this book!
Huge thanks to Danielle Lauzon who stepped up as a developer on this book when my schedule got incredibly busy this year. It's been such a pleasure to see her take this book to completion, and an honor to work with all our writers and devs on this project!
As before… please don’t email or post in the comments with your feedback. With over 11,000 backers, that would overwhelm our ability to deal with emails and comments. Instead give us feedback via this link by October 8th at 10:00pm Eastern:
We’ll be sending this book to the printer in late October, so look for final PDFs before the end of the month, and printed books around the 1st of December. Welcome to Aztlan!
Production Update: September 2017
As our dev teams gear up for Khitai, our production teams have been hard at work on keeping things rolling for our existing projects. Below are the updates for changes in status; remember that you can view the full production schedule here:
The New World: Layout to Proofing, adjusted delivery to October 2017
Lands of Gold and Fire: Dev Editing to Copy Editing, adjusted delivery to November 2017
The Colonies: Adjusted delivery to December 2017
Secret Societies: Adjusted delivery to December 2017
Accessory Updates:
Maps: Delivery planned for October 2017
Novels Updates:
Daughter of Fate: Hardbound shipping set to October 2017
Born Under a Black Flag: Hardbound shipping set to October 2017
The Gossamer Empire: Writing to Dev Editing, Delivery set to October 2017
The Crescent Empire is done! Look for the book in stores on October 4th. Now that Gen Con 50 is behind us, we’ve made some wonderful progress on our current books: The New World, Lands of Gold and Fire, and The Colonies have all see serious progress since our last update.
Mark Richardson has nearly finalized the Aztlan map (for The New World), so we’re down to our last incomplete map: The Colonies. He’s working with our dev team to address all of their notes, and we expect him to finish in the next few weeks. Once that’s done, we’ll get the maps printed and shipped to everyone!
John is back to work on The Gossamer Empire, and he expects to deliver a new draft of the novel to his editor shortly. Since we’re already on our second editing pass, look for digital copies of that novel before the end of October and print copies by the end of 2017. We're still working on proofs for the hardcover versions, but we expect those to ship soon!
John on Satine Phoenix's GM Tips!
John took some time out of his busy development schedule to join Satine Phoenix on GM Tips:
"I recently drove to Los Angeles to join Satine Phoenix on her GM Tips Youtube show. I got to teach Satine some rather unconventional GM tricks and techniques. Most of her guests are Dungeon Masters, so much of the advice was geared toward D&D players. She told me, “I want you to bring the pain!” So, I did. Wait to the end of the episode and see what I did to her favorite character..."
The Children Cry on DriveThruRPG
In addition to all our Kickstarter released material, we're also proud to present our first adventure for Pirate Nations, The Children Cry by Tobie Abad, now live on DriveThruRPG!
Children are disappearing on the island nation of La Bucca, victims of a being they call the Bogeyman, the subject of nursery rhymes and fairy tales. They need Heroes to venture out into the night and battle the monster who preys on them, but is that monster really a slavering beast haunting the island's coasts... or does it roam somewhere much closer to home?
You can pick up this new adventure for 7th Sea on DTRPG:
Thank you to everyone who filled out the Khitai quickstart survey with your questions and feedback. We’re processing those results and plan to publish a blog post addressing the most common questions.
If you haven’t downloaded the quickstart yet, you can still do so for free on DriveThruRPG. If we make updates to the quickstart, those updates will be automatically pushed through to your DriveThru account.
With that, there’s just five days left before 7th Sea: Khitai launches on Kickstarter on October 3rd. Everyone at JWP has been funneling energy, excitement and planning into making this campaign a huge success. It was with your help that 7th Sea: Second edition made waves, and with your backing and enthusiasm Khitai will be no different.
We’ll push out another update when the campaign launches next Tuesday. Thank you for joining us on the next chapter of our 7th Sea adventure!
Crescent Empire in Print and Khitai Quickstart Survey
about 7 years ago
– Thu, Sep 07, 2017 at 09:46:49 PM
Hi folks!
We’ve got a brief update for you today, with a longer production update coming later this month. Read on!
Gen Con and ENnies
A big thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello at Gen Con. It was great being able to deliver Khitai Quickstarts to you in person and to share our excitement for the upcoming East launch.
Thank you also to everyone who voted in this year’s ENnies. We were overwhelmed by your support. Because of your enthusiasm for the return of 7th Sea, we came away with:
It’s taken a crew to get here, and this crew couldn’t be happier. Thank you!
Crescent Empire in Print!
As you may have already seen in your email, we’ve received the print copies of Crescent Empire and we’re ready to ship them out to our backers. Liz Chaipraditkul, as Lead Developer, did an amazing job bringing this book to print. We’re thrilled to see Terra expanding before our eyes!
As with our other sourcebooks, we’ll be running the delivery for these books through our webstore via coupon codes delivered through Backerkit. We’ve already pushed those coupons out via email, but if you didn’t get an email, you can grab your coupon directly from the Backerkit Digital Downloads page:
Coupon code error warning: Unfortunately, this batch of coupons imported into backerkit with a glitch that’s added a forward slash character at the end of the coupon code. If you copy/paste your code into the website and it’s not accepted, you’ll have to remove that slash from the end of the code: CRESCENT/ should be changed to CRESCENT
Apologies for that inconvenience. We’ll figure out why that happened so we can prevent that from happening when future codes are delivered.
Your coupon entitles you to free shipping on your book, which applies to any other books you add to your order as well (like an additional Core Rulebook, Nations of Théah Volume 2, or the newly released 7th Sea novels!) This coupon is also good for one year, so you can wait to use it if you’re about to change your address or want more than one book delivered at a time.
And if you didn’t yet purchase a physical copy of Crescent Empire and want to pick one up… now is a great time to buy your copy direct from our webstore:
Congrats again to Liz Chaipraditkul and the crew of Crescent Empire! They’ve put together another beautiful book, so join us on a journey from the courts of Iskandar to the dunes of the 8th Sea!
Khitai Quickstart Survey
If you haven’t already downloaded the Khitai Quickstart, it’s available now as a free download on DriveThruRPG. In an effort to keep questions and feedback about the quickstart in one place, we’ve created a four-question survey form to collect your input.
As with sourcebook previews, please don’t email or post in the comments with your feedback. With over 11,000 backers, that would overwhelm our ability to deal with emails and comments. Instead give us feedback via the above link by Wednesday, September 13th at 10:00pm Eastern.
We’ll be announcing the official launch date for the Khitai Kickstarter soon, and after processing your survey questions and feedback, we’ll address some of the most common questions in a blog post before the launch of the Kickstarter.
Stay tuned, and following along online as we share art previews, blog posts, and stories from Khitai!
JWP at Gen Con 2017 and a Special Surprise
over 7 years ago
– Mon, Aug 14, 2017 at 10:28:26 PM
JWP at Gen Con 2017
It’s hard to believe a year has passed since 7th Sea: 2nd Edition was released at Gen Con 2016. Since then we’ve seen the release of five sourcebooks, a new7th Sea podcast, two novels, the Pirate’s Booty, the Explorer’s Society on DriveThruRPG and more. It’s been a busy year for 7th Sea… and we’re not done yet!
In just a few days, John and the crew will be traveling to Gen Con 50. We’ll have the core rulebook and all of the currently available sourcebooks on hand, John’s complete indie game catalog, the Pirate’s Booty accessories, the 7th Sea novels and a very special surprise for Gen Con attendees...
If you’ll be at Gen Con in Indianapolis next week, visit the John Wick Presents booth (booth 2338) to pick up an advance preview copy of the 7th Sea: Khitai Quickstart. We’ll have a limited number of quickstart copies available, so be sure to stop by early to ask us about Khitai. We’ll dip into our secret stash and slyly slide a quickstart your way.
The quickstart includes a preview of seven new nations, including:
Fuso: A powerful island nation devoted to military might and domination, Fuso’s samurai are some of the most feared warriors in the East. But a nation completely devoted to warfare can never be at peace, and Fuso stands on the brink of ascension to the power—if anyone can agree who ought to be in charge.
Agnivarsan Empire: Also known as the Land of 10,000 Gods, Agnivarsa was once ruled by the Crescent Empire, but won its independence long ago. It is a fertile, dense land made of tiny kingdoms, struggling to hold together among a dozen different courts and mysterious dense jungles.
The Kiwa Islands: A collection of island nations across the southern Eastern Sea, the voyagers of Kiwa race to explore and claim islands, newly appearing all across the ocean. Whoever controls the most land decides the fate of the kingdoms of Kiwa, their people and the future. But the monsters rising from below the sea endanger every seafarer in the Islands, and perhaps all of Khitai itself.
In addition to the four nations not mentioned here, the Khitai Quickstart also includes a mechanics overview, new sorceries, and an introduction to The Song of the World—the pull towards duty and destiny that sets a Khitai hero apart from the heroes of Théah.
If you won’t be at Gen Con, that’s okay! John Wick Presents will be launching the Kickstarter for 7th Sea: The East this September. We’ll also be uploading the quickstart PDF to DriveThruRPG after Gen Con, so it will soon be available for all to download for free.
Meet heroes bound by honor and a duty to serve the World. Explore the nations of Khitai, with histories spanning back thousands of years. Play out stories inspired by the likes of Seven Samurai, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and more. There are so many different kinds of heroes in the world and so much of the world of Terra left to explore. We can’t wait for you to join us on a journey to the East!
Spots Still Available in the 7th Sea LARP
Finally, if you’re headed to Gen Con and you’re looking for more 7th Sea, Danielle Lauzon will be debuting the new 7th Sea LARP, with Thursday, Friday, and Saturday slots still available.
Freiburg Haunting sets up the events of the weekend by introducing the Heroes to Eisen and a strange mystery occurring around Freiburg. The Heroes must decide how best to handle what they find. This event will lead into the final event, Council of Princes, and Hero actions will influence story elements. Join us as we explore the dark forests of Eisen in an afternoon of swashbuckling adventure.
Council of Princes is the culmination of the weekend, where the Heroes will help decide the fate of Eisen. The circumstances of this event are still unknown, influenced by the Heroes' actions in the Freiburg Haunting events, where the Heroes must decide how to handle a strange disturbance to the land. Participation in the previous events is unnecessary. Join us in our grand finale for the Gencon weekend and help us decide how Eisen will answer this threat in an afternoon of swashbuckling adventure and political intrigue.
Curious about the LARP but not sure if it’s for you? LARP developer Danielle Lauzon gave a wonderful sneak peek in last month’s episode of the Spirit of the 7th Sea Podcast. Listen here.
What’s next?
7th Sea novels are up in the webstore this week, Crescent Empire is headed to DriveThru and the sea shanty album is almost ready for its public debut. As we gear up for the East Kickstarter, we’ll also be revealing more about Khitai in coming weeks. Stay tuned!

– Sat, Aug 12, 2017 at 12:24:10 AM
Hey folks!
Lots to catch up on today! In addition to the official release of The Crescent Empire on PDF to backers, we’ve got paperback novels, the full suite of accessories (decks, GM screen, etc) on PDF, and our August production update!
The Crescent Empire PDF
Now that we’ve resolved The Crescent Empire through print proofing, we’re ready to release the PDF to backers via Backerkit:
In an ancient land of sand and sun
Those who burn brightest cast the longest shadows.
When the rightful empress returned home to reclaim her throne, the empire rejoiced. As the empire awakens to a new dawn, Anatoli merchants to Sarmion nobles work towards a new life, holding close the ideals which make the empire strong—family, honor and kindness.
However, progress is not made without pebbles in the sand. The dethroned sultan plots to recover his throne and his lover, controlled by an otherworldly force, seeks to aid him. Jinn have awoken hungering for the power over mortals they had many years ago...
This book contains material for 7th Sea: Second Edition including new mechanics for Poetry Duels, Backgrounds, Advantages, Stories and Sorceries. It also includes five new Nations:
Anatol Ayh, the seat of power and shining star of the Crescent Empire
Ashur, an independent city state run by both Assassins and pacifists
Persis, ruled by a cruel shah whose vendetta against the empress may tear his country apart
Sarmion, a proud Nation rebuilding after the most recent Numanari attack
The 8th Sea, a vast desert filled with proud tribes and ancient beasts
Will the empire fall under these threats? Join the fight for the empire’s bright new destiny!
As with other final digital files, this sourcebook has been pushed out to backers via Backerkit. If you didn’t get an email from Backerkit, you can grab the files directly from the Backerkit Digital Downloads page:
Look for the full Crescent Empire PDF to go on sale next week on DTRPG! We’ll have print copies out to backers around September 5th and up for sale on our webstore by the end of September.
Paperback Novels in Print
Just in time for Gen Con, we’ve received paperback print copies of the first two novels: Daughter of Fate and Born Under the Black Flag:
As with our sourcebooks, we’ll be running the delivery for these books through our webstore via coupon codes delivered through Backerkit. We’ve already pushed those coupons out via email, but if you didn’t get an email, you can grab your coupon directly from the Backerkit Digital Downloads page:
Note that your coupon entitles you to free shipping on your book, which applies to any other books you add to your order as well (like an additional Core Rulebook, Pirate Nations or any other JWP product!) This coupon is also good for one year, so you can wait to use it if you’re about to change your address or want more than one book delivered at a time.
And if you didn’t yet purchase a paperback copy of either of these novels and want to pick one up… now is a great time to buy your copy direct from our webstore:
The hardback books will take a bit longer to arrive, but we expect them in September. We’ll push those coupons out to you all as soon as we have the books in stock!
Note: Gen Con Pickup
If you’re going to be at Gen Con this week, you can also pick up your book directly from us at our booth. Just fill out the below form, and we’ll have your book ready for pickup anytime during the convention:
Due to popular request, we’ve updated the Backerkit Digital Downloads with PDFs of the GM Screen, Sorte Deck and Hero and Villain Decks. We hope you enjoy them!
We’ve also received word from our printer that the replacement cards for the Hero and Villain Decks are shipping this month. Since those are shipping directly from the factory in China, they may take a few weeks to arrive, but we expect them to be in your hands by the middle of September. We’ll update you all after Gen Con about specific dates and any tracking information we get from the factory.
Production Update: August 2017
While the summer has been quiet, we’ve been making progress on the remaining pieces of the 7th Sea: Second Edition Kickstarter. Below are the updates for changes in status; remember that you can view the full production schedule here:
The Crescent Empire: at Printer, shipping to backers September 5, 2017
The New World: Dev Editing to Layout, adjusted delivery to September 2017
Lands of Gold and Fire: Adjusted delivery to October 2017

Novels Updates:

We continue to make good progress on the remaining 7th Sea sourcebooks: Nations of Théah: Vol 2 shipped to backers and arrived in retail stores at the end of July, The Crescent Empire is at print and The New World is in layout. Hurray! Huge thanks to Danielle Lauzon for taking on new development duties with The New World to get it across the finish line.
Both Lands of Gold and Fire and The Colonies are still in dev editing, but we expect to see them in PDF in Quarter 4 with print books close to follow. Both sourcebooks are moving along nicely, but we want to make sure we give ourselves plenty of time to finalize art and layout for these new lands. Cities of Faith is finalizing dev editing as well, so expect to see that book heading to copy editing and layout in September as well.
Mark Richardson is hard at work finalizing both the Aztlan map for The New World and the full maps for The Colonies, both are the last maps we need before we ship out the final piece of the Pirate’s Booty Box pledge tier. Look for those in October, once Mark has a chance to wrap up the remaining maps and put together our first “Map of Terra”...
Finally, we’re shipping out our first set of paperback novels (Daughter of Fate and Born Under the Black Flag) this week now that we’ve resolved all the cover issues. The hardback versions will take a little longer to arrive, but we expect those to ship in September. Meanwhile, John is hard at work on Gossamer Empire...
Coming Soon from JWP!
Now that we’re reaching the end of the 7th Sea Kickstarter, we’ve got some cool new stuff planned for the remainder of 2017… and beyond. Stay tuned next week for a special update on some of our Gen Con promo materials, including a sneak peek at some long-awaited projects. Thank you for all the support!
