Production Update: Pirate Nations Preview
almost 8 years ago
– Thu, Jan 19, 2017 at 09:10:23 PM
We have another sourcebook available for you to look at: Pirate Nations! John, Mark, and Ben Woerner did a great job pulling this book into shape, and we're excited to see what you think.
Earlier today, you should have gotten an email from BackerKit with a link to download the Pirate Nations Preview (v1). This is the complete book, with some final rough edges still left to sort out—the front cover, credits, and ToC are placeholders, art still needs to be finalized, the map needs minor corrections, and it still needs an index. Content-wise, though, it's all there.
Also, it's currently in the hands of our proofreader, so there might be some typos and whatnot that we will be getting fixed.
If for some reason your Backerkit doesn’t have the file, please message us via Kickstarter and we’ll get you sorted.
Feedback on Pirate Nations
This book is in slightly rougher shape than Heroes and Villains was when we did the preview, but, be assured that we're not compromising on production time and quality. We want to make sure we have plenty of time to get your feedback and incorporate any needed changes before sending the book to print.
As before… please don’t email or post in the comments with your feedback. With over 11,000 backers, that would overwhelm our ability to deal with emails and comments. Instead, give us feedback via this link by January 26th at 12:00pm Eastern:
Thank you! As always, we hope you enjoy the book and look forward to hearing from you!
Quick Production Update Addendum
Just wanted to update the previous production update with some current bits of news:
Nations of Théah, Vol 1 preview will be coming on the heels of this preview. Expect it Very Soon (tm)!
Nations of Théah, Vol 2 is now in copy-editing!
The Crescent Empire is now in dev editing!
We continue to move things forward, and we appreciate your support.
Production Update: January 2016
– Fri, Jan 06, 2017 at 11:09:37 PM
Hey everyone!
Welcome to 2017… the year of 7th Sea! While we’re thrilled to have released the 7th Sea Core Rulebook in 2016, we’re planning on delivering more than twenty different 7th titles, accessories, maps and releases this year. It’s going to be big!
Heroes & Villains in Print!
To start, we’ll be sending Heroes & Villains out to backers by the end of January, as soon as we get them back from the printer. Obviously, the holiday slows down the process a bit, but we’ll get the books out the door before the end of the month!
As a reminder, we’ll be delivering these books with a new system through our webstore rather than using the addresses in Backerkit. Around the last week in January, we’ll be sending you a coupon through Backerkit that you can use on our store to add Heroes & Villains to your cart for free, providing us an address when we ship you the book. In other words, there's no need to update your address in Backerkit from this point forward.
The coupon will be good for one year; if you want to hold on to it for a bit because you’re moving or something, you’ve got some time to use it. You can even wait until we deliver more books and have us ship you multiple books at once or add new books to your order.
On that note, I recorded myself doing a live unboxing for the Heroes & Villains proof back in December. If you’re interested in the specifics of how we get books made, check out this short (8 min) video of me geeking out about proofs:
Sorte Deck & GM Screen Previews
In addition to getting H&V out the door to backers this month, we’ve finalized both the Sorte Deck and the GM Screen and uploaded them to Backerkit for you all. You can access both through your Backerkit Digital Downloads. (If you’re having trouble, please email us at [email protected].)
Here’s a preview of the Sorte Deck:
The amazing Jabari Weathers (http://jmwillustration.com/) illustrated these for us, and we’re incredibly happy with how they turned out. We can’t wait to get them to you in a physical form! Check your Backerkit Digital Downloads for the full set.
Here’s a preview of one panel of the GM Screen interior as well, but check your Backerkit for a full size image with all three panels:
Fabien Badilla put together a bunch of great resources for the GM Screen, and we’re excited to get it printed for use at your table. If you’ve got any feedback about the GM Screen, please fill out the feedback form here:
Thanks for all the support and feedback. It makes a huge difference to us!
Production Update: Jan 2017
Now that we’re back from the holiday break, we’re getting the machine rolling again to get the remaining supplements out the door. Here’s the production update for January:
Books:
Pirate Nations: Copy Editing to Proofing!
Nations of Théah, Vol 1: Copy Editing to Proofing!
Nations of Théah, Vol 2: Dev Editing to Copy Editing
Lands of Gold and Fire: Writing to Dev Editing
The Crescent Empire: Outlining to Writing
Cities of Faith: On Hold to Outlining
Accessories:
GM Screen: Layout to Proofing
Storium: Writing to Copy Editing
Pirate’s Booty and GM Screen: Adjusted delivery to March 2017
Basic Rules: Adjusted delivery to February 2017
Storium: Adjusted delivery to February 2017
Novels:
Daughter of Fate: Layout to Proofing
Born Under a Black Flag: Writing to Dev Editing, adjusted delivery to Feb 2017
We’ll be previewing Pirate Nations and Nations of Théah, Vol 1 toward the end of this month, and we should get on a roughly once-a-month schedule with sourcebooks for the rest of the year. The Year of 7th Sea!
We’ve had a bit of delay in China for the Pirate’s Booty, mostly caused by the Chinese New Year. Early reports indicated that we’d get everything on the boat to the United States before Chinese New Year, but the size of the project (100,000 dice!) meant that things are moving a bit slower than planned. We’ll keep you all updated if there are any more delays! In the meantime, here's an awesome preview image of the Hero Points:
Finally, we’ve moved the Basic Rules and Storium releases to coincide with the launch of our Explorer’s Society platform on DTRPG (scheduled for Feb 2017). Read on for more info!
Explorer’s Society (Feb 2017)
Our last stretch goal for the 7th Sea campaign was the launch of a fan-created content portal through DTRPG. While we didn’t quite make it to $1.35M (!!) during the campaign, we did break that number when we factored in money raised on Backerkit. And thanks to the efforts of Hannah Shaffer (Marketing Director) and the folks at DTRPG, we’re almost ready to launch the platform!
Before we do, though, we’d like to get your thoughts on what you want from the platform. We’re hoping it becomes a portal for all kinds of fan-created content, both free and paid, similar to the Dungeon Master Guild, and we’d like your thoughts on how to make it a success.
If you’ve got a few minutes to tell us what you want from the program, please fill out this survey by Friday, January 20th:
The survey is short, but it’s going to help us make the Explorer’s Society the best program it can be for fans and creators alike. Thanks for your feedback!
7th Sea in Brazil!
As we start to wrap up on our first sourcebooks, our foreign licensing publishing partners are starting to get their versions of the 7th Sea Core Rulebook translated into French, Spanish, Chinese and more!
New Order Editora—our Brazilian publisher who is translating the book to Portuguese—is currently running a crowdfunding campaign to fund their version of 7th Sea (7o Mar) through January 18th. If you’re interested in getting 7th Sea: Second Edition products in Portuguese, you can pick up maps, character sheets, an A4-size book and more!
The campaign has been a big success, funding not only the main book but also their own GM Screen and other stretch goals. Check it out!
Kickstarter Staff: Hannah Shaffer and Lenny Balsera
Over the next few months, a few more JWP staff members are going to be posting on the Kickstarter page, both in the comments and the updates. Please give them a hearty welcome! Here’s a bit more about them:
Hannah Shaffer is a game and web designer, and the Marketing Director for John Wick Presents. Her design credits include websites for John Wick Presents and 7th Sea, Bully Pulpit Games, and the Misspent Youth roleplaying game. Hannah is a co-owner of Make Big Things, a tabletop cooperative responsible for Questlandia, 14 Days, Noirlandia, and the upcoming Damn the Man, Save the Music!
Leonard Balsera is the Creative Director at John Wick Presents. He is best known for his design and development work on Evil Hat Productions' various Fate system games, such as the award-winning Dresden Files RPG, but has worked across the breadth of the industry, with credits from Pelgrane Press, Fantasy Flight Games, Green Ronin, Margaret Weis Productions, Onyx Path Publishing, Steve Jackson Games, and many others. When he isn't eating, breathing, and sleeping hobby games, he spoils his cats rotten, reads voraciously, performs on stage occasionally, and plays a lot of video games. He lives at the intersection of memory and dream, but his physical body resides in Austin, Texas.
Whew. Big update. Thanks again for all your support! We’ll send out more updates this month when Pirate Nations and Nations of Théah, Vol 1 are ready for review!
Production Update: November 2016 and Heroes & Villains Preview
about 8 years ago
– Tue, Nov 15, 2016 at 11:34:12 PM
Hey folks!
Let’s get right to the good stuff: our first sourcebook is finished! Huge thanks to Liz Chaipraditkul (Lead Developer) for getting Heroes & Villains ready for print.
Heroes & Villains Final Preview
Earlier today, you should have gotten an email from Backerkit with a link to download the Heroes & Villains Preview (v1). This is the complete book (minus an index and some credits), packed to the brim with 40 Heroes and 40 Villains ready for you to use at your table.
If you don’t get an email, don’t worry: The book should be available to you on your digital downloads page at this link:
If for some reason your Backerkit doesn’t have the file, please message us via Kickstarter and we’ll get it sorted out for you. We’re really excited about this book. And we can’t wait for you all to see it!
Feedback on Heroes & Villains Preview
While the book is basically ready to go to the printer, we’d love for you all to help us make sure it’s the best book it can be. Your feedback on the Core Rulebook was incredible, and we are excited for you all to give us your thoughts on Heroes & Villains as well.
As before… please don’t email or post in the comments with your feedback. With over 11,000 backers, that would overwhelm our ability to deal with emails and comments. Instead give us feedback via this link by November 20th at 12:00pm Eastern:
Nations of Théah, Vol 1: Dev Editing to Copy Editing
Nations of Théah, Vol 2: Writing to Dev Editing
Accessories:
Pirate’s Booty: Proofing to Printer
GM Screen: Copy Editing to Layout
Pirate’s Booty and GM Screen: Adjusted delivery to January 2017
Basic Rules: Adjusted delivery to November 2016
Storium World: Outlining to Writing
Novels:
Daughter of Fate: Copy Editing to Layout
Born Under a Black Flag: Outlining to Writing
As you can see, we’re going to be sending Heroes & Villains to the printer very soon (as soon as you all get a chance to look at it) and nearly all the Pirate’s Booty materials have already been handed over to the printer. We’ll have more updates on exact delivery dates when we get them from our vendors. Look also this month for John’s first novel and the Basic Rules!
The New World Art Preview
While The New World goes through developmental editing, our art staff has been getting the first round of images finalized. Here's the Empress of Kuraq, one of the new Nations featured prominently in the book:
And here's a group of Tzak K'an warriors facing off against a dangerous rock lizard in the jungles of Aztlan:
We'll have more previews of The New World (and the rest of the 7th Sea sourcebooks) in the coming months!
Holiday Closures at JWP
As we get closer to the holidays, we’d also like to note that we’ll be closed on the following dates:
November 23rd - November 27th
December 22nd - January 2nd
We’ve been planning on these closures since earlier this year, so they won’t affect production, but we won’t be responding to email or messages until we return to the office. If you need something, please message us before or after these dates. Thanks!
Production Update: October 2016
– Sat, Oct 22, 2016 at 12:47:47 AM
Hey folks!
As with last month, we’ve got a lot to talk about. Our staff has been hard at work since our last update! Let’s get to it...
The New World: Adjusted delivery date to February 2017
Nations of Théah, Vol 1: Writing to Dev Editing
Sorte Deck: Layout to Proofing
GM Screen: Writing to Copy Editing
Basic Rules: Layout to Proofing
Daughter of Fate: Dev Editing to Copy Editing
Born Under a Black Flag: Outlining to Writing
We’ll be making continued updates to the production schedule throughout the month. Check that page often if you want the latest info about where each project stands. In general, we’re making good progress on all the pieces of the project, and we’re excited to start releasing sourcebook content every four to six weeks starting in November.
We're also excited to officially send the Pirate's Booty materials (dice, decks, etc) to the printer this month. We're working with KrakenPrint to make sure that all the materials are really great, and we should have some more news on that schedule in early November as well.
Heroes & Villains Preview
Now that Heroes & Villains is at layout, we’ve got a few sample pages to share with you. We’re incredibly excited about this book, both because it provides a wealth of NPCs and pregenerated Heroes...and because it’s going to have a ton of awesome art.
Each Hero or Villain will be featured on a single spread:
We’ll have the full book available for you all to proof (before it goes to print) in early November!
7th Sea Redbubble Store
While we’ve put a huge focus this last few months on outlining, developing, and writing sourcebooks, we’re also thinking a lot about the other stretch goals you all funded, including the community achievements. Today, we’re proud to announce that the JWP Redbubble store is up and running:
Thanks to Hannah Shaffer and Marissa Kelly, we’ve got travel mugs, laptop skins, phone cases, and so much more. Check out the store, and let us know if there are other images you’d like to see on Redbubble gear!
Last 3 Days for Fortune’s Star
As we noted a little over a week ago, there’s still time to back the first 7th Sea computer RPG: Voyage of Fortune’s Star. While the Kickstarter project has a ways to go before it funds, there’s still time left to help the ship reach its destination. Here’s a bit more about the awesome story that will come to life if the project funds:
Captain of the feared pirate vessel Fortune’s Star, former Vodaccan duelist Anzolo Zorzi has a fearsome reputation, a loyal crew, and one of the fastest blades in all of Théah. But he also has a heart of gold. When he arrives at the scene of a naval battle to claim plunder from both winner and loser but salvages only an enormous stone sarcophagus that floats on the water, Anzolo has no notion that he’s embarked on the strangest—and most dangerous—voyage of Fortune’s Star.
Anzolo expects to recover gold and jewels from the sealed tomb, but instead discovers a most surprising and long-missing clue that may allow the renowned Kreuzritter to defeat the legendary Schattenmann, a scissors-fingered creature that terrorizes that forests of Eisen. Unfortunately for Anzolo, and perhaps for the knights as well, the Kreuzritter require the pirate’s assistance.
Fortunately, Anzolo has a guardian angel looking over him. Magdalena Salvaza is the Fate Witch currently entrusted with the generations-old duty of waiting for this moment. The Fate Witches of her line expected to guide someone of greater character than Anzolo Zorzi, but Magdalena’s confidence in the pirate captain grows as she learns about his past and as she observes him in the present. Even as Anzolo faces dangers, forces allied with the Schattenmann understand that defeating Magdalena is the true key to foiling the Kreuzritter’s ancient plans.
Next Up...
In addition to Heroes & Villains, there are a few other projects coming along that will hit your inboxes soon:
Daughter of Fate: John's put the finishing touches on the novel, so the only step left is to get it copy edited and laid out for digital readers. Print copies will come later this year, but stay tuned for the full novel in November!
Free Basic Rules: When 7th Sea became the #1 tabletop RPG Kickstarter of all time, we promised to put together a set of free basic rules that make the game available to everyone who wants to be a Théan Hero! Look for this to be released on our website in November as well!
Thank you again for all your support! We're so excited to see the 7th Sea community grow and grow as we release all of the awesome stuff you've funded. Thank you!
Add Wind to the Sails of Fortune’s Star
– Wed, Oct 12, 2016 at 11:43:17 PM
Yet… Voyage of Fortune’s Star needs strong winds to achieve its port of call in two weeks. As Théah’s most ardent supporters, we need your help to make this game a reality! We’ve got a ways to go and only 11 days to get there:
From the very beginning, we’ve loved the story ideas for this game that Stewart Wieck shared with us. As the founder of White Wolf, Stewart comes for the tradition of storytelling games in tabletop RPGs, and the dual-protagonist story of Voyage of Fortune’s Star demonstrates this story-driven emphasis and also honors the diversity that is so important in 7th Sea.
As a quick reminder… the game stars Anzolo Zorzi, a former duelist who is now Captain of Fortune’s Star. Arriving at the scene of a naval battle, Anzolo and his crew are astonished to see a stone sarcophagus churn to the surface of the ocean. Clearly valuable, impenetrable to instruments at sea, and too heavy to load, the sarcophagus is set in tow. Thus begins the next chapter of Anzolo’s life…and sets in motion the centuries-old duty that has fallen to Magdalena Salvaza, a Fate Witch far-removed yet ever-present.
A scoundrel ship captain? A noble fate witch? A STONE SARCOPHAGUS? Stewart and his team clearly get 7th Sea, and we can’t wait to see what else they cook up for the setting. Here’s a clip of the game in action to give you a sense of how it will actually look:
Awesome Pledges
The campaign has a bunch of awesome pledges! You can pledge for a reward of a digital download of the game for only $17, though great add-ons including TTRPG material and dice, as well as a collector’s boxed edition of the game, are available at higher pledge levels.
Here are some things to keep in mind as you consider whether you’d like to support Voyage of Fortune’s Star:
Everything in the computer roleplaying game (cRPG) is an officialextension of 7th Sea. The characters, events, stories… everything in the cRPG is 100% official. We’re working closely with Stewart to make sure the story has plenty of reveals about the hidden secrets of Théah.
Don’t miss the tabletop RPG rewards! The $22 ROLL DEM BONES and the $40 SPECIAL BONES rewards include a digital download of Voyage of Fortune’s Star… and custom dice available only through this project that you can use to play 7th Sea. (Shipping in the USA is even included in these pledges.)
The project also includes a brand-new 7th Sea adventure that we are creating to accompany the computer game. You can get a PDF of this adventure with the $30 DIGITAL POWDER MONKEY rewards and a printed copy with the $60 PAPER POWDER MONKEY rewards.
Check out the dice:
Spread the Word
You can support the growth of 7th Sea and support this project even if you’re not interested in the rewards. Share the project with your friends or generally on social media, or use these links that will help backers of the project achieve Social Media Stretch Goals:
We can’t wait to play Voyage of Fortune’s Star! Stewart and his partners at Fuel.Tech in Houston are hoping their 7th Sea cRPG excites you too, and they really appreciate your support.
